High Tech: must read- Researchers figured out how to hack computers using heat

Heat has always been a problem for computers, but now there’s more to worry about than smoking a CPU or GPU. Researchers have figured out how to hack into computers using heat.

Researchers at Ben-Gurion University have created a new piece of malware called BitWhisper. It’s not the kind of thing that organized cybercriminals would ever use to attack your home computer. BitWhisper is the kind of crazy hacking tool that you read about in a sci-fi novel — only it’s very real Infected machines can transmit data using heat they produce. Commands, for example, can be passed from one system to another by modulating its temperature. The target machine’s thermal sensors pick up on the fluctuations and execute a predefined action. Small bits of captured data (like passwords) can also be transmitted this way.

It’s not the most efficient way to siphon data off a machine, but it’s not meant to be. BitWhisper targets air-gapped systems, computers that are completely isolated from wireless and wired networks in order to keep them as secure as possible. These are sensitive government and military systems and nuclear reactor control computers. That sort of thing. But even air-gapped machines can be infected, and they frequently are — usually by incredibly sophisticated, state-sponsored malware.

BitWhisper is malware that’s built for the long haul. It’s okay that it captures information slowly, because the alternative is never capturing any data at all.

How would BitWhisper get on a machine in the first place? Well, it could probably be pre-loaded onto a hard drive that was intercepted in the mail — or delivered on an infected USB flash drive, which people are somehow still plugging into highly-sensitive equipment even though they know better.

Terror pics : Nigerian Army's Victory Over Boko Haram In Pictures

President Goodluck Jonathan has assured Nigerians that the country’s military would soon be victorious against Boko Haram.

The Nigerian Army has recorded a string of victories against the sect in recent times due to efforts being boosted by support from a multinational force which includes troops from Chad, Niger and Cameroon A concerted push by Nigeria’s military and neighbours Chad, Cameroon and Niger has regained considerable ground in the fight against Boko Haram. The Nigerian army said it has repelled Boko Haram from all but three local government districts in the north-east As they inch closer to total victory, the military men and officers fighting the war against the Boko Haram sect in the Northeast are in high spirit.

Here are pictures taken by Nigerian and Chadian troops in the fight against Boko Haram

Terror : Nigerian Navy To Confront Boko Haram

Newly commissioned officers of the Nigerian Navy could be deployed to the North East to be part of the war against Boko Haram insurgents, this is according to the Minister of Defence, Lieutenant General Aliyu Gusau (rtd).

The Minister made the disclosure on Friday, March 20, 2015, in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, as the Reviewing Officer for the Passing out Parade of Direct Short Service Commission course, 22 Cadets at the Nigerian Naval college at Onne, Rivers State.

While advising the 110 commissioned officers to be focused and committed to their duties as Naval officers, the Minister, who was represented by the Chief of Defence Staff , CDS, Alex Badeh enjoined the newly commissioned officers to ensure they internalized all the internal security training they were given during the programme.

Talk : Why the WEST must pay attention to Nigeria

As Nigerian armed forces, backed by a multinational African coalition, make strides against Boko Haram strongholds in the north while Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) secures the final touches on the new voting system, the international community waits in anticipation ahead of the March 28th presidential elections. Largely fought between incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan and General Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s presidential elections will be a turning point for Africa’s leading economy. But is the EU really paying attention?

A country of approximately 170 million and a GDP of $521 billion, Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy and most populated nation. What’s more, Nigeria is set to become one of the world’s 10 leading economies by 2050, surpassing countries like France and the UK thanks to a projected average growth of around 4.5% to 5.5% per year.

A blossoming partnership

As the most powerful member of the Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS), Nigeria is a vital partner of the European Union in the political, economic and security fields. Specifically, the EU “has supported Nigeria’s efforts to improve its democracy and proceed to a fairer distribution of power between its central and federated elements, mediating between national and local interests while preserving internal unity”. However, despite the 2009 “Nigeria-EU Joint Way Forward” agreement aimed at enhancing dialogue between Nigeria’s domestic political forces, the EU stopped short of tackling some of Nigeria’s more deep-rooted problems, including poverty, corruption, institutional consolidation and unemployment.

Given the increasing importance and influence of Nigeria in the region and on the international arena, the EU should also work with Abuja on tackling the regional challenges of peace and security. Such an approach would be consistent with the EU’s values and its interest in having a committed and stable partner in the region. Commenting on the rising threat of the violent Boko Haram insurgency, which has taken the lives of over 14,000 people since 2009 and displaced millions of Nigerians, the EU’s High Representative, Federica Mogherini recently underlined that the “EU remains committed to providing a comprehensive range of political, counter-terrorism and development support measures to Nigeria and its neighbors”. Again, the Union felt content with airing some wooly comments, but has not taken any meaningful, non-rhetorical steps towards joining the fight against radical extremism.

Indeed, Boko Haram is not included in the 2012 EU Strategy for Security and Development in the Sahel, despite the fact that the group controls an area the size of Belgium in northern Nigeria, which has become a channel for arms trafficking, kidnappings and terrorist activities. The increasing regional threat stemming from Boko Haram’s violent actions warrants further security collaboration between the EU and Nigeria, especially under the auspices of ECOWAS and the Africa Union. Even if Boko Haram has registered setbacks in recent months, West African terrorism has by no means started with the group and will definitely not end with it. Nigeria has been battling terrorism for decades, making it hard to overstate the importance of finding a durable security solution for the region as a whole.

The X-Factor

This year’s much awaited presidential elections, already postponed by 6 weeks from the original February 14th date, are decisive not only for Nigeria’s future but also for the subsequent role the EU will play in the country.

President Goodluck Jonathan of the People’s Democratic Party is fighting for re-election, in a poll that will come down to the wire. During his term, his administration made many strides in various sectors, creating 1.6 million jobs, reforming the agricultural sector and lowering inflation to its lowest level since 2008. His National Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP), launched in February 2014, aims to raise annual revenue of manufacturers, industrialize and diversify Nigeria’s economy, and create new opportunities for the country’s small and medium enterprises. However, in spite of his considerable economic achievements, Jonathan has been blamed for his inadequate response to the Boko Haram insurgency as well as his inability to root out corruption among government ranks. According to a report released by Global Financial Integrity, between 2003 and 2012, Nigeria lost some $160 billion to corruption via illicit financial outflows.

Taking advantage of Jonathan’s pitfalls, ex-military dictator Muhammadu Buhari, candidate of the All People’s Congress Party (APC) has gathered the support of large parts of the population. Promoting his rather non-descript platform for “Change” Buhari has vowed to squash Boko Haram once and for all and embark on a fight against corruption in the country. But is that a credible promise or is it just hot air meant to draw to his side the disenfranchised Nigerian population?

Since Buhari is not a newcomer on Nigeria’s political stage, his past actions should speak louder than the carefully crafted words of today. Following a military coup d’etat in 1983, Buhari came to power and ruled Nigeria with an ‘iron fist’, embarking on a war against indiscipline that resulted in ghastly human rights abuses, the jailing of opposition forces and severe restrictions on the freedom of press. His dismal economic record, which saw the country’s GDP fall by 33% in two years, led to his overthrow in a counter-coup in 1985. While many believe General Buhari is the strong leader the country needs to fight a growing feeling of insecurity, his former controversial rule and lack of real policy, threatens his chances at the polls. As noted by Richard Dowden, Director of the Royal African Society (UK), “Buhari talks about the same old disciple, but cannot offer a new vision”.

According to Pakistan’s former prime minister, Benazir Bhutto, “democracy is necessary to peace and to undermining the forces of terrorism. Although Buhari has proven his dedication to fighting corruption, his stained past, former human rights abuses and propensity for violence, put the former General at odds with the professed values of the European Union. The EU will therefore have a vital role to play in Nigeria’s future by doing what it does best: promoting democracy, human rights and helping the country address problems of corruption and security, both domestically and on a regional level. While Nigeria offers multiple opportunities for economic and security cooperation, the country’s future leader will be the deciding factor for the path Nigeria will take as a leading African country. Brussels should bear in mind.

U.S. : pledges more equipment, others for anti-B’Haram war

By Abosede Musari, Abuja on March 16, 2015

FROM the United States (U.S) government has come a pledge of further support for the multinational force combating Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria and the neighbouring countries.

According to the spokesperson for the U.S Department of State, Jen Psaki, the support which will come in the coming weeks, will take the form of equipment provision, advice, intelligence, training and logistics.

Psaki who pledged the support on behalf of the U.S government during interactive session with journalists recently said his home government has been providing general support to the forces to counter activities of the terrorists group and will consider additional support in the coming weeks.

“We are aware of reports that Chadian and Nigerien troops are taking action against Boko Haram in northeastern Nigeria, as are Nigerian forces. We welcome the coordinated efforts by the defence and security forces of the region to protect civilians from Boko Haram. “We are providing general support for the counter-Boko Haram effort, including equipment, training, and intelligence. We’ll consider additional equipment, training, advisory, and logistics support in the weeks ahead, and that’s something that has been ongoing in terms of our support for the counter-Boko Haram efforts for some time now,” he said.

On the recent declaration of allegiance to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) by Boko Haram, Psaki, who dismissed the declaration as nothing different from previous ones, however, said that his country would study the validity of the report, and would continue to study the situation closely. “We’re undertaking to assess the validity of these reports. Regardless of what links may or may not exist, Boko Haram remains a tremendous threat to the stability of the region and the safety of civilians. I think it’s important to also note that Boko Haram has previously pledged allegiance to both AQIM and al-Qaida core in the past, but those pledges were assessed to be pledges of solidarity rather than any indication that its leadership plan to take orders from or allow these groups to usurp control”.

“In fact, we observed minimal operational cooperation among the groups in that particular case. So I just thought that was relevant information in terms of what’s happened in the past. Obviously, we’ll look into this, but we’ve also seen similar claims that are more designed for propaganda purposes than operational engagement. But we’ll, of course, assess the validity. We’ll assess what it means. We continue to watch closely, and obviously, we take any of this seriously.

Nigeria : Army in Final Push against Boko Haram in Gwoza, Sambisa, Goneri

The military is set for a final push to retake Gwoza, Sambisa and Goneri, the last three major havens of Boko Haram insurgents. This is in furtherance of its determination to make the areas safe ahead of the upcoming general elections.

Also, the military plans to use this week to review its ongoing campaign in the North-east.

Gwoza Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State, which is the de facto headquarters of Boko Haram self-proclaimed but dwindling caliphate, Goneri town in Gujuba LGA of Yobe State, and Sambisa Forest are among the last strongholds of the Boko Haram terror group in the North Eastern Nigeria yet to be liberated by the Nigerian military with the support of troops of the allied countries of the Lake Chad Basin Commission.

Military sources disclosed that Gwoza is the only major town yet to be recaptured.

The sources noted that even though Bama has not been officially declared liberated, "as there are still some strategic mop up operations", all LGAs have been retrieved from the insurgents except Gwoza.

"Apart from Gwoza LGA another remaining part of the Nigerian territory to be liberated is Goneri town in Gujuba LGA of Yobe State."

It would be recalled that the Director of Defence Information (DDI), Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade, while on a tour mission in the North-East last week confirmed the completion of the operations in Adamawa State.

Olukolade said that the Nigerian troops have succeeded in clearing terrorists out of Madagali, which is the last frontier held by the Boko Haram terrorists in Adamawa State.

He also noted mopping up is on-going in other areas, and that more details would be provided by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ).

The Defence Spokesman, however, could not speak further on the operations when contacted by THISDAY, especially the nature of the territories still under the siege of the Boko Haram terrorists.

Nevertheless, some top security and intelligence sources told THISDAY that the only remaining town in Yobe (Goneri) would soon be liberated as the military are already headed there to engage the terrorists.

They also noted that Bama would soon be officially declared liberated, while a major and final onslaught would be launched to free Gwoza.

On Sambisa forest, military sources explained that the forest is a large territory that straddles across four LGAs in Borno state including Bama, Konduga and Gwoza.

"This to the effect tells you that any LGAs that have been recaptured also include the part of Sambisa forest within it. I can tell you that there was massive bombardment of that area and most of the terrorists have also fled," the source said.

One intelligence source further explained that most of the Boko Haram terrorists are majorly concentrated in Gwoza town, and that their control does not cover all parts of the LGAs.

The source noted that the planning for the final liberation is well detailed and cautious because of the difficult terrain of Gwoza, which is criss-crossed with caves, dangerous mountains, valleys and parts of the dreaded Sambisa forests.

"However, I am sure that in a matter of days the major combat operations would be achieved and mopping up operations would follow, if things go according to the plans. We are positive because the troop’s morale is high and we have appreciable right kind of arms and ammunition to finish the job. The victory is at hand," the source assured.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) 2015 First Quarter Conference coming up this week will be tailored to seek new ways to improve the ongoing strategies in the counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency efforts in the North East.

The Acting Director of the Army Public Relations (DAPR), Col. Sani Usman, disclosed this in a statement yesterday, saying that the conference is also aimed at discussing general administration of soldiers.

According to Usman, the first quarter conference will be "reviewing the ongoing military campaign against terrorists in the North East and other internal security operations, as well as taking stock of Nigerian Army's activities within the last three months".

He said that "the conference will also project and strategize for the next quarter and the remaining part of the year and consider the Nigerian Army development plan in the next 20 years.

"Preparations for ensuring security before, during and after the 2015 General elections will also feature in the agenda".

The Army Spokesman added that conference was expected to take far reaching decisions that would place the Army in a more robust position to effectively carry out its constitutional duties.

Nigeria: Boko Haram torches Bama town as troops regain control of villages

Hundreds of people have fled their homes in northern Nigeria after terror group Boko Haram set buildings ablaze.

The incident occurred in the rebel-controlled town of Bama, in Borno State, as Nigerian troops are advancing to regain control of the area.

Who are Boko Haram?

Boko Haram fights against Western influence in Nigeria and aims to impose its version of Sharia law in the country. The group declared an Islamic caliphate in Gwoza, along the Cameroon border, in August 2014.

Boko Haram has raiding several cities in the north of the country in a bid to take control of more land.

Three states, Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, have been under a state of emergency since May 2013, due to Boko Haram's deadly attacks.

Witnesses told AFP that the insurgents warned residents to leave before torching the town. Dozens fled towards Maiduguri, capital of Borno state.

"They came into the town around 12pm warning that anyone who wanted to leave should leave the town and soon after they began torching homes," resident Umar Kaka said. "Not all residents could leave because some are too sick or old to leave and we are afraid they were burnt in the homes."

The attack in Bama was carried out after troops managed to push the insurgents out of the nearby Boboshe and Yale villages.

"We learnt soldiers were coming. They advanced on Bama on two fronts and met some resistance at Boboshe and Yale but succeeded in crushing the Boko Haram gunmen," said Bama resident Ibrahim Kyari.

"They asked residents to leave which came to us as a surprise because they kept us captives all these seven months and would not allow us to leave."

The Nigerian army is aided by African Union soldiers – comprising troops from Niger, Chad, Benin and Cameroon – in the fight against the insurgents, who have killed thousands of people in north-eastern Nigeria in recent years.

The deployment followed President Goodluck Jonathan's decision to postpone presidential elections by six weeks on grounds of security.

In February, Nigeria announced the fight against the insurgents, who recently pledged allegiance to terror group Islamic State (Isis), is almost over. However, critics have cast doubts on previous claims by the Nigerian government and army that they had reached a truce with the terrorists.

Breaking : Boko Haram gunmen raid village

N’Djamena - Fighters from Nigeria's Boko Haram Islamist insurgency attacked a village in Chad early on Sunday, killing one person, local residents said.

Boko Haram, which is seeking to carve an Islamist emirate out of north-eastern Nigeria, has expanded its zone of operations over the past year, but attacks on Chadian territory remain rare.

“Boko Haram elements this morning attacked the village of Djargagoroum, between Ngouboua and Kaiga,” said a resident of the targeted village who asked not to be named. “The attack was repelled. We count one dead and two houses were burned.”

Boko Haram raided nearby Ngouboua, on the shores of Lake Chad, last month in the group's first known lethal attack on Chadian soil.

Chad's military has spearheaded an operation by Nigeria's neighbours against the insurgency, which has killed thousands and which last week pledged its allegiance to the Islamic State militant group.

Breaking : Bombs found in camp for displaced people in Maiduguri

Soldiers on Saturday detonated two homemade bombs found in a camp housing people displaced by Boko Haram violence in Maiduguri.

Two men suspected of planting the explosives were arrested and an investigation is ongoing, they said.

The bombs were found in the city’s Yerwa primary school, prompting panic until soldiers destroyed the bombs from a distance.

The school was converted into a camp for Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) after Boko Haram Islamists captured the town of Bama, some 70 kilometres (43 miles) from Maiduguri, last July.

“Two improvised bombs were found in Yerwa primary school IDP camp by the people who notified soldiers stationed nearby,” local vigilante Ari Butari said.

“The soldiers asked people to evacuate before shooting the bombs from a distance, triggering two explosions that didn’t harm anyone,” he said.

“Two men were arrested on accusation that they were involved in planting the bombs. They drew suspicion because they were not known to be living in the camp,” he added Butari accused Boko Haram of being behind the foiled bomb attack.

His account was supported by Suleiman Yusuf, an IDP staying in the camp.

“Some people saw two abandoned black polythene bags and called the attention of our leaders in the camp who in turn informed security personnel,” Yusuf said.

“The bags turned out to be containing bombs and the soldiers asked everyone to stay clear of the bombs which they detonated from a distance,” he said.

He confirmed that two men were detained after raising suspicions.

“Everyone is vigilant and once a new face shows up we all remain on the alert,” he said.

Scores of IDP camps dot Maiduguri following a huge influx of people fleeing towns and villages seized by Boko Haram, doubling the population of the city which stood at around one million people.

This is believed to be the first foiled attempt to attack any of the camps in the city.

The six-year-old Boko Haram insurgency has killed some 13,000 people and displaced 1.5 million in Nigeria and neighbouring countries. (AFP)

Geek : First new BBC Micro in 20 years

The BBC launched the first BBC Micro personal computer in December of 1981. 34 years later, they’re launching an all-new Micro, but this one’s decidedly different.

It’s called the Micro Bit, and it’s a development board that’s small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Or a schoolchild’s hand, which is where the BBC wants to put them. They’re preparing a million of the boards, which will be given out to all UK students entering secondary school this fall.

There’s a key difference to how the BBC is positioning the Micro Bit compared to the original Micro. The first time the BBC launched a Micro, Sir Clive Sinclair was understandably upset about a government-funded competitor to the ZX Spectrum. This time they’re being careful not to step on anyone’s toes. The Micro Bit is meant to be a complimentary device, and it’s made to work seamlessly with other dev boards like the Raspberry Pi, Arduino boards, and Intel’s Galileo.

The BBC is actually working with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, and they’ve got a bunch of other major tech industry players involved, too: ARM, Microsoft, Google, Samsung, and BT to name a few. .The Micro Bit is part of a massive push by the BBC to help the UK shore up their digital skills gap. It’s always been a part of the BBC’s mission, and recently they’ve been working on new ways to help. You might remember the nifty little Doctor Who game that teaches kids programming logic by issuing commands to a Dalek.

Kids will be able to create programs for the Micro Bit using C++, Python, and TouchDevelop when they reach schools this September. The hope is that the Micro Bit will help inspire Britain’s youngsters… and maybe kickstart the career of the next Sir Clive Sinclair.

Medical Discovery : Dogs are being trained to sniff your urine for cancer

A study conducted at The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and working with The Frankie Foundation, v 34 urine samples from patients that potentially had thyroid cancer. They hadn’t undergone a biopsy yet so no one knew who had full-blown cancer and who had a more benign thyroid disease. The team then tasked Frankie, a German Shepherd trained to pick up the cancer’s distinct aroma, with delivering a nose diagnosis.

After he made his picks, the biopsies were performed, and the dog correctly guessed 30 out of 34 results, 88.2 percent accuracy. The conclusions were fairly evenly split with 15 patients testing positive for cancer while the other 19 were not.
More tests are needed before this method becomes widely adopted. Next time the team plans on working with Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine to train bomb-sniffing dogs in the sacred art of thyroid cancer detection.Thankfully a dog does not need convincing this is a promotion for their sniffing career.

However, based on this experiment, the school’s endocrine oncology doctors that led the process say that Frankie was about as accurate as the traditional, more invasive, and more expensive way of checking for the cancer. And besides, most people would probably prefer to have a dog smell their pee than get a needle jammed in them.

Discovery : Forget counting sheep, just buy a can of sprayable sleep

For far too long now poor insomniacs have been drinking their way to sleep, whether it’s with sleep aids, warm milk, or something a bit stronger. But now, a new revolution in sleeping technology promises to cut out the middle man that is the human liver and deliver dreamy relief directly to your face.

Soon you’ll be able to spray yourself to sleep with this new remedy called Sprayable Sleep. Sprayable Sleep works by applying the sleep-regulating hormone melatonin directly to the skin, like on your neck, an hour before going to bed. By circumventing the digestive system, the spray promises users faster relief, restful sleep, and no grogginess upon awakening. The initial response from testers has been promising.

The product was created by Ben Yu and Deven Soni at Stanford University last March along with a team of chemists and designers. There’s no word on whether or not the idea originally came to them in a dream, though. After a successful Indiegogo campaign, Sprayable Sleep is finally going into production. Each $15 bottle is good for one month and has 60 sprays. Over 20,000 bottles are currently being manufactured Through their company Sprayable Inc., Yu and Soni have also developed other spray-based medicine. In fact, Sprayable Sleep began as a counterpart to their previous product Sprayable Energy, which uses the same technology to provide instant topical caffeine.

You have to wonder what would happen if you sprayed both on yourself at the same time. Would you explode, or would you achieve absolute balance? There’s only one way to find out for yourself. Check out Sprayable’s online store for more info.

Discovery : (most know)Chameleons use crytsal mirrors to change their colors

Chameleons are some of the most fascinating creatures on the planet, and they only get more fascinating when you examine them using an electron microscope. That’s what a group of scientists at the University of Geneva just finished doing. Their goal was to definitively determine how chameleons change the color of their skin, and they think they’ve got a pretty clear picture.

It turns out that it’s not pigment that makes the magic happen. It’s tiny crystal mirrors (called iridophores, a type of chromatophore) embedded in a chameleon’s skin that allow it to alter its appearance. When relaxed, the iridophores in a chameleon’s skin are packed together tightly. When it becomes excited, they spread out. The movement of these tiny “selective mirrors” affects how light is reflected off the chameleon’s skin, and the end result is that an observer sees different colors. Smaller gaps between the crystals produce blues and greens; wider ones yield oranges and reds.

Chameleon’s aren’t the only creatures with iridophores in their skin, but they are the only ones that split them into two layers. The upper layer, which has a somewhat regular cellular arrangement, reflects light in the visible spectrum. The lower one has a more haphazard layout, and it helps chameleons reflect near-infrared frequencies and regulate their body temperature.

That trait isn’t unique to chameleons either, but again, they appear to be the only reptile that sports both systems. The Geneva team isn’t ready to make the final call just yet, though. They’re going to perform more experiments to confirm that the second layer really is a sort of a passive cooling setup.

Tech : (Nigerians needs this) Superhydrophobic paint used to make people pee on themselves in public

Urinating in public. I’m sure we’ve all seen it happen, and in my experience it usually involves a drunk person in desperate need of relief and any old wall looks inviting enough to use. But for everyone else, it stinks, and costs money to clean up. St. Pauli, a quarter in the city of Hamburg, has decided to take action against it, and superhydrophobic paint has come to the rescue.

It’s very difficult to catch a person peeing in public, and even harder to get them to stop once they’ve started. You can try, but not too hard in case they turn their attentions in your direction mid flow. So the local group called St. Pauli’s Community of Interest has declared it’s Peeback Time What they’ve done is to cover public walls typically seen being used for urinating against with a superhydrophobic coating. This stops any liquid from sticking to or being absorbed by the wall, but also bounces it back in the direction it came with more force. The end result is the urine ends up back on the person producing it, either on their legs or pooling under their feet.

It seems unlikely this will deter a drunk person with a full bladder from doing their business. But it may block their entry to another bar if they turn up at the door smelling of well, piss, and sporting soaked trousers. For non-drunks, it should have the desired effect by making them think twice about doing it again.

The head of the Odua Peoples Congress, OPC, Gani Adams, has called for the immediate sack of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Attahiru Jega.

Mr. Adams, an ally of President Goodluck Jonathan, stated this while speaking in Lagos on Sunday.

Among the reasons for his call, Mr. Adams said Mr. Jega has failed to explain how INEC was able to successfully distribute 90 per cent of Permanent Voters Card, PVC, in North East despite the insurgency in the region.

“I Otunba Gani Adams is using this forum to call for immediate sack, removal or retirement of Professor Attahiru Jega, the chairman of INEC on the basis of PVC distribution, introduction of card reader and creation of 30000 bogus and fraudulent polling units in the northern part of Nigeria against the southern part,” the head of the Yoruba socio-cultural group said while speaking on his organisation’s Eledumare Festival.

Mr. Adams also voiced his opposition to the use of card readers for the general elections, saying, “We have not heard how card readers contributed or added value to any major election in the world.

“To me, it’s an attempt cleverly being injected by Jega to cause delay, confuse voters and prevent majority of voters in exercising their franchise on that day”.

The electoral agency had explained that the decision to use card readers was to limit electoral fraud by ensuring that only true owners of legitimate cards could use them to vote. The opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, which supports the use of the readers, has repeatedly alleged that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its supporters, do not want the readers used so as to perpetuate electoral fraud; a claim the ruling party denies.

Despite INEC announcing it had dropped the plan to create additional polling units after the announcement last year created divides along ethno-religious lines, Mr. Adams accused the electoral agency boss of proceeding with the plan.

“In his ingenious but highly fraudulent stride at rigging the election, Professor Jega has gone through the back door at creating an additional 30,000 polling units not known to law and designated as voting centres to deceive people having been heavily criticised by distinguished and eminent Nigerians,” he said.

The OPC leader said the various actions of the INEC chair would have earned him an immediate removal and sack in other climes

While calling for Mr. Jega’s sack, Mr. Adams urged the federal government to begin the search for a new INEC chair.

“The new chair can come from anywhere. He can come from the north or south. I’m not choosing for the President, but Jega should go” he said.

Mr. Adam’s call is part of a barrage of similar ones by some people, mainly supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan. Last week, the Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, also a major ally of the president, supported the sack.

“President Goodluck Jonathan can sack Jega if he wishes and if he does, heavens will not fall,” Mr. Fayose said in apparent response to the local and international condemnations that have trailed the rumoured plan to remove the electoral chief.

President Jonathan has, however, said he has no plans to remove Mr. Jega.

While speaking on Sunday, Mr. Adams, who is also the coordinator of Olokun Festival Foundation, asked Yorubas to participate in the Eledumare Festival which began on Saturday.

“This year’s celebration is not going to be devoid of the usual glamour and atmosphere of praise and worship for God, the Alpha and Omega of our faith. We also want to use this festival to appraise the society and contribute to the growth of our nation; spiritual, political and economic”.

The festival, a 21 days event, will end on March 26. (Premium Times)

Nigerian Troops : Boko Haram child captives 'forgot names'

About 80 children rescued from a Boko Haram camp in Cameroon cannot remember their own names or origins, according to an aid official who visited them.

The children - aged between 5 and 18 - did not speak English, French or any local languages, says Christopher Fomunyoh, a director for the US-based National Democratic Institute (NDI).

The children were found at a camp in northern Cameroon in November.

Nigeria-based Boko Haram militants have extended their campaign into Cameroon.

The militants are fighting to establish an Islamic caliphate in north-eastern Nigeria.

They control several towns and villages in the region and recently pledged allegiance to Islamic State (IS) militants, who have seized large areas of Syria and Iraq

Lost touch'

The children were rescued in Cameroon after security forces - acting on a tip-off - raided what was thought to have been a Koranic school.

Boko Haram!!! : Chadian President Says Jonathan Allowed Shekau Escape At Dikwa!

The latest bombshel from the Preseident of Chad has revealed the shocking news that the Nigerian President, Jonathan Godluck, has not been fortright with Nigerians, and had been playing games with the lives of Nigerians in his ghost fight against the notorious Boko Harm

Reuters Report yesterday quoted extensively from interviews granted by the Chadiaam President, Idriss Deby where he revealed that it was Chad unilaterally that finally decided to take the war to the Boko Haram and NOT President jonahan as he has been claiming. Furthermore, President Darby revealed that rather than seriously confronting the Boko Haram, President Jonathan and his military top brass have actually been stalling the process of decimating Boko Haram at every turn. As part of his desperate moves to get reelected, Our President Jonathan claimed that after five years of tolerating the Boko Haram that has killed thousands of Nigerian citizens, he finally decided, after postponing the elections for 6 weeks, to defeat Boko Haram and show Nigerians he was not incomptent as many have assumed. This latest bombshell by the Chadian president has exposed this terrible lie by the president for what it is. The Chadian President’s press conference has now exposed the truth that ‘this real war against the terrorists was decided upon unilaterally by Deby in reaction to Boko Haram obstructing Chad’s trade routes with Nigeria and the economy of the landlocked nation’.

The following are direct exerpts from the reuters report:

“Officials from Chad, Niger and Cameroon say lack of cooperation from Nigeria has for months hampered efforts to put together a regional taskforce against Boko Haram. Chad was compelled to take unilateral action in January, under a deal that allows it to pursue terrorists into Nigeria, after Boko Haram violence started to choke off imports to its economy. But for a country proud to be a major African power, it would be an embarrassment to President Goodluck Jonathan as he seeks reelection for a smaller nation to tackle Nigeria’s security problems, diplomats say. “Chad has been ready to press deep into territory controlled by the Islamist group but Nigeria refused to let them. We turned back because Nigeria did not authorise us to go any further,” army spokesman Colonel Azem Bermandoa said. Nigeria has for months hampered efforts to put together a regional taskforce against Boko Haram. End quote

Of course, Nigeria’s military spokesperson, General Chris Olukolade, has come out on Wednesday to deny the Chadian claims of Nigeria stalling Chadian aggression against the terrorists. Olukolade claimed that instead his people have been trying their best to dislodge boko haram for the last few months.

I guess NIgerians can decide for themselves whether the Nigerian govt is indeed serious about getting rid of Boko Haram or whether the Jonathan goverment is simply using the Boko-Haram as an excuse to further loot the treasuries of Nigeria and put a wedge between the North and South for political reasons.

Movie - Game Of Thrones debuts the beautifully deadly Sand Snakes

Don’t be fooled by the title of HBO’s newest behind the scenes peek of the upcoming fifth season of Game of Thrones: the weapons of Dorne aren’t just whips and steel, they’re sex and badassery This featurette gives us the best look yet at the Sand Snakes, the late Oberyn Martell’s (Pedro Pascal) bastard daughters by Ellaria Sand (Indira Varma). They’ll be played by beautiful young actresses Jessica Henwick (Nymeria Sand) , Rosabell Laurenti Sellers (Tyene Sand), and Keisha Castle-Hughes (Obara Sand), and each one is paired with a specific type of lethal Dornish weapon Obara, being the oldest, takes after her father and is deadly with a spear Middle child Nymeria will depart from her book weapon of choice and instead wield some nasty-looking dagger Youngest Nymeria will wield a mean whip.

Yeah, “deadly, nasty, mean” that’s the style of the Sand Snakes, alright.

The sisters all share the last name “Sand,” the bastard title of Southern Westeros (like John “Snow” is Northern) share a mother in this iteration. It might irk fans of the Song of Ice and Fire books by George R.R. Martin as in the text each of the Sand Snakes had a different mother. Also in the book, Nymeria was more of a poisoning gal. But if TV shows were like the source material, we would have seen the Lazarus Pit on Arrow by now. We haven’t. Conclusion: TV shows adapt for thrills and simplicity.

Tech Fault - DoD’s oldest weather satellite explodes, debris field still expanding

Even though sound is impossible in a vacuum, it’s basically impossible to keep an explosion quiet in space. This week, news broke that in early February a satellite in the US Department of Defense’s longest running weather satellite had exploded in orbit. The government is blaming a “temperature spike,” which is about as helpful as saying a person died because of “lethal trauma.” The military is being characteristically tight-lipped about the disaster, but despite the wish to keep a low profile, public safety meant it had to acknowledge the explosion publicly. The explosion itself had a limited impact, but now there’s a potentially bigger problem: dozens of pieces of satellite shrapnel now headed outward in all directions.

Those 43 pieces of debris are all currently being tracked as they move through space, and warnings for course corrections will be given out to space operators as needed. Though at this point it seems unlikely that the satellite explosion will lead to any runaway cascades of orbital destruction, it’s worth pointing out the danger: this seemingly spontaneous explosion could have caused real damage to every party in space. So, the question for anyone concerned with preventing more such dangerous rolls of the cosmic dice from occurring again in the future is this: what exactly caused this explosion?

The most immediately obvious possibility is a solar event like a sun-spot. These can certainly wreak havoc with space technology, but they tend to interfere with electronics more than super-heat parts of the body. In fact, it’s hard to imagine any solar event that could have caused such catastrophic damage without

The threat of a runaway cascade of orbital debris is real,

also damaging, or at least

and growing.

affecting, other similar satellites. We can also rule out aggressive action from any other space power — if anyone was going to try something with American space tech, they wouldn’t tip their hand with a cloud-monitoring weather satellite. (All cynicism about official stories aside, Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Flight 13 almost certainly was really looking at clouds.)

One remaining option is that the satellite, being so old, simply suffered a mechanical or design failure that led it to fold under regular solar pressures. This is certainly possible, though if so it seems to demand an inquiry into that defect, and into how such a defect could be prevented from recurring in the future. As of right now, there has not been any suggestion that the explosion will be used to prevent future accidents of a similar nature. This might be nothing more than typically closed lips on these issues, but it could also imply something more secretive.

New Tech (must read) SanDisk introduces a 200GB microSD

Remember when having just 4 or 6 gigabytes of space on a clunky iPod hard drive seemed revolutionary? It sounds so long ago, and I’m not even that old. Well prepare to become even more painfully aware of the unstoppable passage of time thanks to SanDisk’s record-setting 200GB microSD card.

SanDisk previously pushed their memory format to the limit with last year’s 128GB microSDXC card, and using similar technology they’ve now raised that cap to 200GB. Why would someone want to store so much data on a device you could accidentally swallow? It’s easy: for smartphones. People view and store tons of data on their phones, from photos to apps to videos to music, and with these new cards storage space will most likely never be a concern. SanDisk claims that 20 hours of HD video can fit on the card with transfer speeds of 90MB/s.

Of course, to use one of these cards in your smartphone you need to own a handset with a microSD slot. That’s not going to happen if you select an iPhone, and Samsung has decided not to support memory expansion on its forthcoming Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge. If this trend continues, SanDisk will be looking to other forms of gadget to keep the sales flowing.

The 200GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card hits shelves in the next few months for $399. But if that’s still not enough space, you could also check the card’s big brother the $800 512GB SD card. Or you could just get a hard drive.

Tech (Geek Wars) Forget Touch ID, ZTE’s new phone scans your eyes

Fingerprint scanners? Please, say the engineers at ZTE. It’s the 21st century. We’re living in the future, so isn’t it about time our smartphones had biometrics that were a little more advanced? You know, like retina scanners.

That’s exactly what they’ve done with the Grand S3 (catchy name, right?). They’ve outfitted their new flagship with Eyeprint ID, “a pioneering eye-based biometric solution” created by a company called EyeVerify. It works by mapping the unique vein patterns in your eyes.

Unlike Touch ID, there’s no special biometric sensor in the Grand S3. It’s a fairly standard setup for a higher-end Android device, with a 5.5-inch display, a quad-core Snapdragon processor, and 3 GB of RAM.
To authenticate a user, EyePrint ID just needs a decent camera to work — one that’s capable of shooting at least 720p video. The 8 megapixel front-facing shooter on the Grand S3, clearly, is more than up to the task. Version 2.0 of their authentication was finalized this past November, and it’s capable of verifying an eyeprint in about .8 of a second.

That’s about as fast as Touch ID can authenticate you on an iPhone or iPad. Not a bad trick for a security feature that doesn’t require any fancy hardware.

You can even try it out yourself if you want. If you own an Android or iOS device, you can download EyeVerify’s demo app. You’ll look a bit goofy while you’re training it (you have to follow a target with your eyes, sort of like how you calibrate a gamepad), and you won’t actually be able to use it to unlock your phone or replace passwords. Still, it’s a neat way to see how eye scanning works on the ZTE Grand S3.

Science : (must read)Alligator blood may be our next source of new antibiotics

The alligator is a solitary animal and quick to defend its territory when in close proximity to other alligators. This leads to some quite serious wounds being inflicted when they fight, but despite their bacteria-filled habitats, those wounds heal easily and quickly. That’s thanks to their awesome immune system, which researchers believe could lead to our next major antibiotics breakthrough.

The key to an alligator’s immune system is the enzymes contained in their blood combined with cationic antimicrobial peptides, or CAMPs for short. The enzymes alone are capable of dealing with 23 different types of bacteria as well as performing well against the HIV virus. However, if you add in the CAMPs found so far, alligators can fend off E.coli, sepsis, food poisoning, and skin infection bacteria.

In total 45 peptides have been identified so far from one type of alligator. The next step is to extend the blood analyzing to the wider crocodilian family to see if there are any variations in the immunity offered. There’s a chance new antimicrobial peptides could be found, which would potentially lead to new antibiotics.

New antibiotics are so difficult to identify because they are found in nature. First you have to discover the potential for one, isolate it, then get it to grow in lab conditions. Scientists managed that for the first time in 25 years recently when a new antibiotic was discovered in soil samples. Hopefully that can happen again by analyzing alligator or crocodile blood.

Tech : Plastic as strong as steel developed, cars are going to get much lighter

There is a growing focus at the moment on making all of our transportation more fuel efficient. This can be done in a number of ways, including developing ever more efficient engines. However, the weight these engines need to move also comes into play. The lighter a vehicle is, the less fuel is required to carry it along. With that in mind, Sekisui Chemical has developed a new resin that’s as strong as steel, while at the same time being much lighter.

The resin is actually made up of a three-layer structure. Polyolefin foam is encased in thermoplastic sheets that have a nanoscale graphene-like carbon sheet integrated into them. The end result is a very strong, rigid plastic sheet that can be easily heat molded in a press to form a desired shape while retaining that strength Sekisui states that the sheets, which can be up to 10mm thick, are available in two forms. The first focuses on stiffness and weighs 3,500 grams/m 2 . The second focuses on minimizing weight by reducing stiffness and weighs just 2,200 grams/m 2 . For comparison, an equivalently stiff steel sheet weighs 10,100 grams/m 2 . That’s a huge weight saving The combination of lightweight, easy molding, and steel-like strength potentially make it ideal for use in cars, trains, ships, and even aircraft, and Sekisui will be focusing on these markets. There’s also plans to explore its use in construction. And of course, there’s one more advantage to using a plastic resin instead of steel, especially in vehicles subject to the elements: it won’t require the same treatments and paint to stop corrosion. That will also mean a saving on manufacturing and maintenance costs as well as weight.

Samples of the new material are set to be available by the summer of this year. If the resin turns out to be as good as it sounds we could see a company such as Tesla experimenting with it to make its cars even lighter without compromising safety.

Tech : Samsung S6 Edge with curved screen unveiled at MWC

Samsung will sell two versions of its next flagship phone, one of which has a screen that curves round its sides.

The Galaxy S6 Edge uses the feature to provide a quick way to stay in touch with select contacts, and to alert owners to important information.

It will be sold for a higher price than the standard S6, which otherwise has the same specifications.

Samsung lost market share to Apple and others after the S5 sold fewer copies than its predecessor in many countries.

Its replacements were unveiled in Barcelona, ahead of the start of Mobile World Congress. They go on sale on 10 April in 20 countries, including the UK. Samsung says the two phones feature a 64-bit processor it designed to be both more powerful and energy efficient than before

Metal frame

The South Korean firm said it had set out to address past "missteps", and had codenamed the devices "project zero" to reflect the need for a rethink.

Changes include making the TouchWiz user interface simpler to use by cutting the number of pop-up messages and introducing a metal frame and glass back instead of the plastic styling of earlier models.

The redesign has, however, meant some features have had to be jettisoned: the phones are not water-resistant, they do not have a microSD slot for extra storage and their backs cannot be removed to change their batteries he Galaxy S6 Edge's curved screen lets it shine a colour on the table when face down, providing a signal as to who is calling

Even so, one expert praised the company's choices.

"Samsung has clearly listened to feedback - not just for the Galaxy S5, which just missed the mark last year costing the company greatly - but also the S4, which was a product that tried to cram in every piece of technology it could find," said Ben Wood, head of research at the CCS Insight tech consultancy.

"The software has been made into a much more crisp and clear experience, the design of the product has clean lines and looks very nice, and the marketing campaign is expected to only pinpoint three things -and that's certainly something that had been missing from Samsung's products for quite some time."

Others were more critical. Rob Kerr, from the price comparison site uswitch.com, declared: "The dual-curved display just seems too gimmicky, too niche, to really be a crowd pleaser."

Breaking : US police shoot homeless man dead in Los Angeles

US police have shot and killed a homeless man during an altercation in central Los Angeles, in an incident caught on video.

The graphic film shows a violent struggle between the man and several officers in the city's Skid Row area.

Police say that three officers opened fire after the man tried to grab a gun from an officer.

Witnesses said the dead man was known as Africa and had been homeless after treatment for mental illness.

The LA police department said officers had been responding to reports of a robbery and had attempted to use a Taser to subdue the suspect but he had "continued fighting and resisting".

Breaking : Google warns Blogger users over porn

Google has warned users of its Blogger platform that blogs containing sexually explicit images and videos will be made private on 23 March.

None of the blogs will be deleted, but they will no longer be publicly visible, the tech giant says.

People currently posting adult content are advised to either remove it or make their blogs private themselves.

Blogs created after the March deadline may be taken down if they contain adult material, the updated terms state.

Under the updated adult policy terms, nudity will be allowed on Blogger blogs only if it “offers a substantial public benefit, for example in artistic, educational, documentary, or scientific contexts”.

Bloggers are already asked to use the tag “adult” if their site contains explicit material, which means a warning page appears before the site can be accessed.

Under its current terms, Google reserves the right to add that tag itself even if the blog author disagrees.

In 2013 the company banned Blogger sites from carrying adverts for adult websites.
