Tim Cook says Apple Watch will replace your car keys

The Apple Watch will be available soon, and Apple CEO Tim Cook thinks you’ll be using it for a whole lot more than checking notifications or keeping tabs on your health. He thinks the Apple Watch could even replace your car keys.

Well, maybe not your car keys specifically. Cars that support CarPlay might be invited to the party. Then again, it’s also possible that the Apple Watch would only be compatible with the car they’re reportedly working on in-house. It wouldn’t be the first time that an Apple product was made only to work with other Apple products.

It could be a major convenience though, right? You’ll have to remember to charge your Apple Watch every night, if the rumors about its abysmal battery life turn out to be true. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself falling back on your trusty old keys or fob just like the good old days. How much of a convenience would the Watch really be then? If your vehicle has push-button start and a fob with a year-plus of battery life, certainly not much of one. But maybe the point isn’t to make the Watch a replacement for your fob or keys. Maybe it’s to complement them.

It’s a proven fact that Apple’s iOS kill switch has drastically reduced the number of iPhone thefts. What if the Watch acted as a second authentication factor that granted access to your vehicle and allowed you to start it? That could make your car much harder to steal, and there’s no denying that would be a pretty sweet “one more thing.”
